RJ Research initiation 2020

Research Initiation aims to facilitate scientific discussions that will help define issues for future research. This type of support focuses on the phase in which research ideas are framed and have the potential to lead to future new research.

As such, Research Initiation is intended to support the arrangement of different types of scientific meetings such as conferences, seminars, workshops and the creation of new research networks. The aim is to fund activities that can result in new research ideas in the social sciences and humanities.

Review process

Grants for Research Initiation can vary in size, but their purpose is always to stimulate and promote opportunities for contact in the research community. RJ gives priority to applications which foster international contacts with the Swedish research community.

Assessment criteria is the potential research idea outcome level in the activities but also how well-planned the scientific meetings are.

Funding decisions are made on an ongoing basis during the year, and decisions are announced 3–4 times per semester. There are no set dates for these decisions. No formal reasons for RJ's decisions will be given.

Applications

Grants for Research Initiation may be applied for at any time during the year. However, the activities for which the funds are sought need to be planned well in advance. RJ does not grant funds retroactively for meetings that have already taken place.

The summary is to be written in Swedish and English and may be at most 1,500 characters, including spaces. It should explain why the activity is important, its purpose and how it will be implemented.

The project description may contain up to 19,200 characters, including spaces. It is to be written in Swedish or English and is to include information on:

  • The scientific purpose of the planned activities
  • Previous relevant research in the field
  • The final programme, including participating speakers and titles of their talks

The budget is to:

  • Specify and explain all costs
  • When calculating travel, meals and accommodations, these costs need to be consistent with the grant administrator's travel and representation rules.

Unspecified or unexplained costs will not be approved. Within Research Initiation, indirect costs, salaries, fees or expenses in connection with publications will not be approved.

Granted funding for Research Initiation normally covers all direct costs related to scientific meetings, so co-funding from other sources of funding is not necessary and RJ prefers to be the sole funder for supported activities.

Requisition

Applications until June 2020: The funds granted are paid upon receipt of a requisition and should be requested before the costs for the activities occur.

Applications from August 2020: The funds granted are paid upon receipt of a requisition when the activity is completed.
