Digitization of the Video Documentations of the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden
The Royal Dramatic Theatre of Sweden (in Swedish Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern or just "Dramaten") was founded in May 1788 by the king Gustaf III, and has been the national stage of Sweden ever since. As such, much attention is drawn to Dramaten from researchers and writers on cultural matters, as well as from the general public interested in theatre. In this matter, the video recordings made by the theatre are of particularly great interest. This, of course, is especially the case for extremely interesting productions by outstanding directors, as for example Ingmar Bergman, or for productions where the work of certain actors has attracted much attention. Today, Dramaten has at its disposal about 800 video documentations of its stage productions during the years 1979-2001, documentations that are gradually being ruined by time and repeated use. The aim of the project is to save the most valuable documentations for posterity in the interest of future research by converting them into digital form (DVD).
