Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) has supported the digitisation of more than 300 Swedish-American newspapers, which are now freely accessible to everyone.

The complete collection of Swedish-American newspapers is now available online.

In 2010, RJ, together with three other funders, supported a project to digitise 39 Swedish-American newspapers. These newspapers are held by the Minnesota Historical Society, the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center at Augustana College (Illinois), and the American Swedish Institute (Minnesota).

In 2023, RJ decided to fund the digitisation of the remaining 311 Swedish-American newspapers that had not previously been digitised. As a result, the entire historical Swedish-American press is now available to the public, students, and researchers.

RJ has a long history of supporting initiatives related to Swedish-American cultural heritage and of making collections held by various institutions in the United States accessible. In this way, the cultural history that emerged from the large-scale Swedish emigration to the United States, particularly during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is preserved and further developed.

The digitised newspapers can be accessed via the Minnesota Historical Society’s website: Swedish-American Newspapers Collection

The digitisation project was carried out in collaboration with the National Library of Sweden (Kungliga biblioteket).
