Art Meets Research in the Exhibition on Apocalypse
The Gothenburg Museum of Art’s new exhibition Apocalypse: From Judgment Day to Climate Threat is the result of an initiative by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) to foster collaboration between research and culture.
The Gothenburg Museum of Art was one of seven organizations granted funding through RJ’s initiative Art and Culture, aimed at creating new productions rooted in academic research. The goal is to make the humanities and social sciences more accessible to a wider audience. The exhibition draws inspiration from research projects in art history, the history of ideas and religion, as well as media studies.
Apocalypse: From Judgment Day to Climate Threat explores different ways of relating to the end of the world. It showcases how apocalyptic themes and catastrophes have been visualized—from the Renaissance to today—through graphics, painting, sculpture, and video.
One of the research projects behind the exhibition is Religion and Natural Science in Early Modern Scandinavia by Håkan Håkansson, Associate Professor in the History of Ideas and Learning at Lund University. His research delves into the scientific and religious worldviews of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The exhibition Apocalypse: From Judgment Day to Climate Threat will be on display from February 22, 2025, to January 18, 2026, at the Gothenburg Museum of Art.
