Omsorg om demokratin: Emotionellt arbete i splittrade samhällen
This sabbatical project investigates how citizens in Brazil, Italy, and Sweden respond to three pressing threats to democracy: segregation, polarization, and rising political hostility. Based on eight years of fieldwork, the project develops a new theory of "caring for democracy," emphasizing the emotional and relational work required to sustain democratic life. Through in-depth case studies—urban segregation in Brazil, rural polarization in Italy, and Swedish civil society responses to political burnout and declining trust in institutions—the book reveals how citizens confront these challenges, often at significant emotional cost. By offering an ethical and strategic framework for civic engagement in deeply divided societies, the project provides a fresh perspective on democratic resilience.
The sabbatical includes research stays at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Ca’ Foscari University, where I will present the book and engage with scholars through seminars. A series of podcast episodes will further disseminate the project’s insights. This work will make a substantial contribution to democratic theory, expand international academic networks, and enhance Lund University’s profile in democracy research by fostering new collaborations and organizing a workshop aimed at developing a special issue on citizens’ democratic practices in times of crisis.
