Opinions and notions of democracy among young people in an upheaval of politics
This project focus on upper secondary students views on social issues, politics and democracy. Young voters' opinions and values are often analyzed as a question difference between generations: changes in opinion are revealed in comparisons between the young and the older generation or between youth generations over time. I am committed to the interest in comparisons over time but focus on differences in political attitudes, interests and practices among young upper secondary students. How does conditions during adolescence, educational pathways and future prospects shape political interest, engagement and attitudes towards democracy of upper secondary students?
Revisiting upper secondary schools in three geographical locations (Uppsala and the mining districts in Västerbergslagen: Fagersta, Grängesberg, Ludvika and Smedjebacken) that were at focus in a study conducted 15 years ago, this project offers a unique opportunity to analyze how political attitudes and interests of upper secondary students changed over time and how the changes relate to social and geographical changes, changes in the composition of upper secondary education and in the youth labor market, in short changes in what young people's future prospects looks like.
In a monographic style, using present and previous study, the aim is to analyze the social and cultural conditions for political interest, opinion orientation, attitudes and trust in politics and democratic institutions of upper secondary students.
