Internationalism and Social Changes in Middle Italy during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age: The Luni sul Mignone Case

The project concentrates on socio-economic and demographic changes in central Italy during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age. Inquiring the transition of know-how and international contacts will give a broader perspective. Mostly unpublished material from the Swedish excavations in the sixties at Luni sul Mignone, circa 65 km NW of Rome will be used as a base of data. At Luni unusual architectural remains were found consisting of trenches cut into the rock, some interpreted as "longhouses" from the middle and later part of the Bronze Age (XVII-XI cent. B.C.). Findings of Mycenaean shards in two of the trenches indicate international connections. Its possible that they point at a Mycenaean interest in the Tolfa Mountains coppers ores, some kilometres to the south. Or imply the presence of wandering metal specialist teaching the locals more sophisticated sides of metallurgy. These are problems of particular interest as well as a unique, probably two stored house from the Early Iron Age or the Tolfa-Allumiere facies (X-VII cent. B.C.) a local group of the Protovillanova culture. This building has been considered as the seat of a chief or clan leader and may suggest social stratification and the rising of elite groups. Contemporary demographic changes in the surroundings are to day better known tanks to various surveys. Analysing landscape and excavated data together may open for a better understanding of those processes that, for instance led to the Etruscans.
