The aim of this project is to make Immanuel Kant's philosophy more available in the Swedish language. Kant (1724-1804) is generally recognized as the greatest philosopher in Germany and still exerts a great influence on Western philosophy. Few of his works are available in Swedish though, and knowledge of his philosophy is hampered by the rather weak position that German has in Swedish school education nowadays.
The project consists of infra-structural measures of three kinds. The main one is to support the scientifical part of the work of translating four of Kant's main works. This is done by supplying philosophical expert advice that shall make possible a co-ordination and early examining of the already ongoing translations (which are supported by Erik and Gurli Hultengren's Foundation for Philosophy). This work was started in the middle of the year 2001 by a first grant from the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation and is scheduled to be concluded by the end of 2003. It is carried out by Ph.D. Markku Leppäkoski.
A second and minor part of the project is the writing of introductions to three of the translations and of a philosophical examining of a translation of an introductory German book about Kant's philosophy. Leppäkoski is responsible also for this part and for a third part of the project consisting of preparations for a Kant conference with open lectures to be held in 2004 in connection with the two hundred memorial of Kant's death.
