The conceptualisation and perception of money and the value of money by Swedish politicians - related to the discussion in England and the actual monetary policy in Sweden 1815-1862.

The aim of the project is to examine closely the grasp and articulation of monetary theories by Swedish politicians during the period 1815-1862, against the background of the modern discussion on the 19th century Currency and Banking School debate. We will identify 10-15 prominent politicians and follow their role in the discussion on monetary policy and examine their political and theoretical statements over time. Their understanding of money and finance had great importance for the institutions that were founded in the first half of the 19th century - such as private banks and the regulations that surrounded them. The contemporary discussion in Sweden will be compared with that in the United Kingdom. Were the Swedish thinkers and decision-makers only repeating the statements of their UK counterparts or did they articulate their own thinking? Can the arguments in the early 19th century be seen as "pre-Wicksellian"? Thus, we will also attempt to contribute to the modern history of Swedish economic thought.
