Book illumination in Vadstena Monastery

This project studies manuscripts from the late medieval Bridgettine Monastery of Vadstena in Sweden, from an art historical point of view. The monastery has been studied from a wide range of perspectives by several scholars, but the art historians have shown a little interest in the Vadstena manuscripts. Most art historians interested in Bridgettine manuscripts or iconography have focused upon art objects or manuscripts not produced in Vadstena. The Vadstena produced manuscripts contain illuminations, but mainly of non figural content. The illuminations are mainly decorated initials and marginal borders. These book illuminations can, when taken together with the physical shape of the manuscripts (i.e. the codicology and palaeography) give important information concerning the book production of the scriptorium. By analysing the illuminations in an interdisciplinary context, they will deepen the knowledge of book production in Vadstena monastery. This study will mainly focus on questions concerning the distribution of labour in the Vadstena scriptorium and on the international contacts of the monastery as they are reflected in the illuminations of the locally produced manuscripts: Who wrote and/or illuminated in the scriptorium? Was it the same person that copied the text and painted the decorations in a book? Was there an organisation of labour that separated the scribes and the illuminators occupations? Who illuminated the books for, or written by, the monks? Could a manuscript written/copied by a monk be illuminated by a nun, or vice versa? In what respect are the broad range of international Bridgettine contacts of the monastery reflected in the manuscript production of Vadstena monastery?
