World Values Survey 2005: Project administration and Swedish data collection

The two twin projects The World Values Survey (WVS) and The European Values Study (EVS), respectively, together comprise the largest comparative study ever of people's basic value orientations. This is a very potent resource for both the social sciences and arts and humanities research. The WVS has a noticeable Swedish anchorage, and both its secretary and the World Values Survey Association are placed in Stockholm, Sweden. This project will strengthen these characteristics. The Swedish part of the 2005 WVS wave consists of face-to-face interviews with a representative sample of the Swedish population aged 18 and above. We will also run a postal survey for a corresponding sample. The aim is to prepare for a change to a possibly more cost-effective mode of data collection in future WVS waves. The Swedish project also involves a necessary improvement of the World Values Survey webpage. The questionnaire for the 2005 wave is improved in several ways. For the first time, the questionnaire contains a battery of items for the measurement of Shalom Schwartz well-known value orientations. A new battery for people's understandings of the essential characteristics of a democratic system is also included for the first time. The 2005 questionnaire also includes a series of questions about how people relate to the Millennium Goals which were declared by the United Nations.
