Digitising Codex Argenteus
Digitising Codex Argenteus and Its Various Editions
Codex Argenteus, the Silver Bible in Uppsala University Library is an early 6th century manuscript. It is the remnants of a gospel book based on the Gothic Bishop Wulfila's translation of the Bible into Gothic. There are 187 leaves left in Uppsala, and one in Speyer, Germany, of the original (at least) 336 leaves. The project will result in a digital depiction of Codex Argenteus and its various printed editions, comprising about ten books in total. The last edition came out in 1927 and has already been digitised. The digitisation is to be performed at Uppsala University Library, where the material is stored . The project also involves developing methods for digitising old hand-written and printed material, thus developing a database and data mining for the digitised material. This is to be done at the Tampere University of Technology, Finland. The digitised Gothic texts will be annotated philologically, and with respect to the history of language. There will also be a historical commentary on the different works. This is to be done at the University of Iceland and at Uppsala University. The project is a joint Nordic enterprise, which is the reason for the division of labour.
