The Digitalization of the Compilationof the Official Statistics of Sweden (BiSOS)
This project aims to transpose BiSOS in digital form and to publish it freely accessible on the Internet. BiSOS is the most important and extensive archival source containing the official statistics of Sweden, dating from the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. In 1914 BiSOS was replaced by the formal series, the Official Statistics of Sweden. In total, BiSOS is divided into 23 subject areas. The material has a large format (30 x 25 cm), which consists of 200000 pages of text and tables. BiSOS is in great demand and, as a result, its paper has become fragile. BiSOS, was created during Statistics Sweden's first 50 years, and is today a gold mine for studying Sweden and its contacts with the surrounding world. BISOS is an important part of the research infrastructure and of Sweden's cultural heritage. The material in BiSOS will be text-recognized (OCR) and be searchable with modern techniques. During the period in question, the statistics were also published in French, and it will therefore be possible to search the material in both Swedish and French. To provide the best possible open access to BiSOS, a presentation is planned on Statistics Sweden's website. The library of Statistics Sweden also plans to catalogue all issues in the national library system Libris with regard to the digital material. Statistics Sweden will ensure that the digital version of BiSOS will be archived according to standard archival practice. The project will also consult the Royal Library.
