The Face of AIDS:

the Global AIDS Film

The vision of the Face of AIDS documentation project in the short-term is to develop and build an internet based digital education, research, and information tool on key issues related to HIV/AIDS. The long-term vision is to develop the Face of AIDS film archive into a world leading knowledge bank, with future generations and researchers as its prime target group. Documentary film producer Staffan Hildebrand produced his first international AIDS documentary in 1986. This film led Dr. Hans Wigzell, then president of the Karolinska Institute, to engage in a long-term collaboration with Hildebrand, aiming at documenting global aspects of HIV/AIDS over time. The result of the collaboration is 33 AIDS documentaries and 750 hours of unedited film material, covering the period 1981-2006. Digitisation and structuring of the film material, and the development of a web service to access the material, started in 2004, thanks to a grant from Riksbankens Jubileumsfond. The plan is to make an edited version of the film archive accessible through the internet by 2008. The film archive is owned by a non-profit foundation, the Face of AIDS Foundation, based at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm. The project also collaborates with the National Archives and the Royal Technical University. The project has received contributions from: the Swedish Foreign Ministry; Sida; NUTEK; and the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation, among others. A long-term collaboration with the UN AIDS agency, UNAIDS in Geneva, started during 2006.
