Dance in Nordic Spaces: The Formation of Corporeal Identities

The project Dance in Nordic Spaces aims to investigate dance and dancing as participants in the development of "Norden", with a focus on comparative perspectives from the late 19th through the 20th century. The project group consists of eight scholars, from four Nordic countries, who represent a large field of current dance research in Norden.

The project concentrates on two main objectives: theatrical and participatory dance, whose national, international and Nordic aspects are the focal points. The main theme of the project is corporeal modernity: the influence of modernistic ideas on dance and the contribution of dance to the profile of modernity. The project uses multiple source material, including historical documents, ethnographic descriptions and interviews. The research is based mainly on qualitative methodology. Given the comparative perspective, the members will pursue their work in co-operation and the project will arrange common seminars regularly in order to promote its activities. The project is administrated by the department of Music Anthropology, University of Tampere with PhD Petri Hoppu as the project leader.
