Time-geography in a global context. International developments and prospects of Torsten Hägerstrand s time-geographic approach

Time-geography provides tools for understanding the inevitable couplings in time and space that are fundamental for peoples' daily life, for the production of goods and services, and consumption in societies, with far reaching consequences for climate and environment. However, such couplings are seldom acknowledged and even though time-geography is one of the most fundamental theories in human geography its full potential has not been exploited yet. There is a need for an initiated and comprehensive book in English about time-geography, its developments and prospects. I will write such a book, based on readings, meetings with researchers inspired by time-geography around the world, and experiences from my own time-geographic research.
The time-geographic concepts and methods underline the fluidity in peoples' movements between and stays at places. Since Hägerstrand presented time-geography internationally in 1970, the approach has influenced many fields, including geography, transportation, sociology, public health, GIS, computer science and environmental research. What in the time-geographical approach has been adopted and used in research internationally over the years since the 1970's and what are the current developments? Where has Hägerstrand's ecological view of the world gained ground? What are the prospects? The book should inspire researchers and students in different fields to use time-geography in favor of a sustainable development of society.
