The pedagogeek podcast : insights from the frontier of research

In recent years, the research subject of education has been put under a lot of press from Swedish news media in every conceivable perspective; critical votes are heard in relation to the benefit of the subject in relation to how reliable it may be as a research subject in relation to different areas of science such as neuroscience; in relation to vocational education; pre-school education; mobile phone ban or not etc. This has led many professional teachers to becoming confused about what support and response from research to lean on in order to meet all critical attitudes from the surrounding community. Here, the proposed research communication project aims to try to fill this gap by introducing a positive attitude and spreading new relevant research findings in the broad field of education. The proposal is to launch a podcast in collaboration with Skolporten to spread new research in a double sense; new Ph. D. researchers new results, as presented on Skolporten, which is a great platform for digital communication, which at least in my own case led to a vast spread of my research results into the research and education world. The idea of launching a podcast online based on new research is to make available and broaden this spread to reach even more professional teachers to an even greater extent. The aim is to support teachers in their work, which is to rest on a scientific basis (SFS 2010: 800, chapter 1, 5§).

The podcast was launched in the autumn of 2019 with the support of the Riksbank's Jubilee Fund (ref. No. KOM18-1390: 1) and within a few days rose to the top ten list of most listened to academic podcasts in Sweden. The number of listeners is counted in the thousands and it has become a feature in both teacher education and in other education contexts. The first season collected ten episodes and covered as different research topics as young children's rest in preschool to femininity in hairdressing educations and mathematics teachers' planning work (see and listen to: www.skolporten.se/forskning/poddagogen/ for a complete list).

The idea of ??starting an online podcast based on new research was to make this spread available and broaden it to reach professional teachers to an even greater extent. The goal is to support teachers in their work that must rest on a scientific basis (SFS 2010: 800 chap. 1 § 5).

The project funds from the Riksbank's Jubilee Fund enabled us to set aside time in the service to work with the podcast, but also for the purchase of equipment that ensures a high quality of the end product, and domestic travel to be able to record interviews with researchers in different parts of the country. from Luleå in the north to Malmö in the south, from Gothenburg in the west to Stockholm in the east, and universities everywhere in between.

Three aspects need to be highlighted to further clarify the important contribution that we see that this pod makes. First, we want to emphasize the importance of the project's partners. Skolporten is a politically, religiously and union-independent company whose activities consist of external monitoring and continuing education aimed at those active in the school. Through research conferences, newsletters, websites and a glossy magazine, Skolporten reaches a large part of the Swedish school world's professional teachers, school leaders and administrative staff. Skolporten has generously offered the project a space on their website for links and uploads of the podcast sections, in addition, it has been possible to also make additional publicity for the podcast via the website, newsletter and magazine. That Skolporten is a suitable partner for this project from a distribution point of view is beyond any doubt.

In Poddagogen, we meet in each episode a newly defended researcher and his or her dissertation. We discuss the dissertation and give the author a great deal of space to present the content and contributions of her research herself. We believe that this podcast is an important tool to further disseminate the research and research results of new graduates to the surrounding community.

Third, this pod is aimed at teachers. In these podcast times, of course, there are already podcasts aimed at teachers, this project is not unique in that way. There are teachers as podcasts (annaochphilipslararpodcast; skolsverige.com), the Swedish National Agency for Education podcasts (https://soundcloud.com/skolverket), book publishers with educational publishing podcasts (academic quarter, Natur & Kultur) etc. But what was missing in this context was a podcasts that focus exclusively on the absolute cutting edge of research and how it can be made available and disseminated and benefit teachers and their complex practices. Here we make the assessment that the research spreading project fills an important gap that has effects for both teachers' practical work, for junior researchers, and for the dissemination of new research results.

In addition to being a bridge between the academy and educators, Poddagogen has also become a way for researchers to spread their research within the academy. Several researchers testify that colleagues opened their eyes to their research via Poddagogen and thus invited them to collaborations in other contexts. In addition, we often hear that researchers who participate in Poddagogen are also contacted by other traditional media, such as radio, television and newspapers, as a direct result of having had their research results disseminated via Poddagogen. In addition to this, it can also be mentioned that we see that the Poddagogen section is also used as course literature at the undergraduate level in teacher education.

But what does the future look like then? After the first season was recorded, we have sought funding from several sources, but so far without success. After pausing the recordings, partly due to the economy but also due to the pandemic, the longing and loss has become too great, and at the time of writing we have resumed the recordings and are launching season 2 in the days and the first new episodes of Poddagogen are coming soon .

Keep an eye out, you will find us where you find podcasts!
