Consecration of power elites: Re-production of cultural and symbolic capital in status institutions

This project concerns the compilation and publication of completed and ongoing research on the creation and maintenance of power elites in and through status institutions, which is a relatively neglected area of research in Sweden and internationally. Central theoretical concepts are cultural and symbolic capital, consecration, legitimacy and status. The project aims to publish articles in international journals and anthologies at international publishers with open access and to complete ongoing research in the form of data analysis and preparations for publication of articles and monographs. The project also aims to develop international contacts in Nordic and European elite research environments through guest research stays at Sciences Po in Paris and the Institute of Social Research in Oslo, which will also contribute to strengthening the internationalization of research and teaching on elites at my department at Stockholm University and in the faculty of social sciences.
Final report
This RJ Sabbatical has been used to complete and publish previous research on elites I have carried out and has resulted in several articles published during the project period by leading international social science journals, for example, Cultural Sociology and Theory and Society, or which are currently under review by such journals.

The project has also resulted in the completion of the monograph "Kungen - Sveriges ledare" (Natur & Kultur, 659 pages) for publication in March 2023 (which is also planned to be published in English in 2024), as well as the anthology "Universities under Neoliberalism" (Routledge, 190 pages, editors Mats Benner & Mikael Holmqvist) with publication April 2023.

In addition, the project has enabled the completion of a number of articles that I intend to send to international journals for peer review in 2023.

During the project, I also published two articles about elites based on my previous research on the subject in Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet.

In addition to this, the project has successfully contributed to developing important international relations both in Paris (Sciences Po) and in London (London School of Economics), among other things through the visiting research stays I carried out at Sciences Po and a visit to LSE. An originally planned guest researcher stay at the Institute for Social Research in Oslo could not be carried out due to the covid-19 pandemic. The international contacts I developed through the project have contributed to forming an international project group for the study of economic and political elites in Europe, where, among other things, in 2023 we will seek research funds for joint research from 2024 onwards. The collaboration has also led to the planning of joint publications on the basis of existing and future empirical material.
