Female Ejaculation: Charting Uncharted Waters

Despite women constituting more than half of the population, a notable disparity persists in the scientific understanding of female anatomy and sexual response compared to that of males. This knowledge gap is particularly evident in the limited scientific exploration of aspects such as female ejaculation, a bodily response that has always existed but has been overlooked within the field of research. Based on world-leading and already collected empirical research on women’s and men’s experiences, and a synthesis of literature and archival materials, this project will lead to a groundbreaking monograph, the first of its kind, analyzing the subject. The aim is to explore how the understanding of female ejaculation varies across historical, scientific, and relational contexts, and what implications this multifaceted understanding has for perceptions of female sexuality. To achieve this, and to foster new perspectives in the analyses, two research journeys are planned: two months at the Kinsey Institute, USA, the world’s leading sexological research center with a rich archive to broaden the historical insights; and four months at Åbo Akademi, Finland, to engage in a successful research environment with interdisciplinary expertise in sexual health and response. The work on the monograph is well underway, and a sabbatical year will provide the time required to complete this important work to enhance understanding and recognition of this aspect of female sexuality.
