Documentation Project of the Royal Swedish Opera's Scenographic and Theater Models

The Royal Swedish Opera currently owns a large collection of scenographic and theater models. A scenographic model is a three dimensional "sketch" of a stage set in reduced scale which the scenographer uses to illustrate his ideas. The model is used, in conjunction with detailed drawing and sketches, as a pattern when the sets are to be built at the theater's workshops. A scenographic model is both a practical tool and in itself, a work of art. The other type of model, the theater model, is a model of an actual theater building or its interior. The Opera's collection of approximately 210 production models includes works of Sven X:et Erixson, Stellan Mörner, Sven-Erik Goude, Lars-åke Thessman, Sven Erik Skawonius and other important artists in Swedish theater and art history. In most cases the actual sets of a discontinued opera or ballet production are not saved due to lack of storage space. The models then serve as a unique documentation of the production's scenography. The models are currently kept in a storage room at the Opera's decor workshops and are not available for viewing due to the fact that they have not been inventoried or photographed. Many of the models are disassembled and stored in a non-archival fashion. This project will include documenting, re-assembly, digital photographing and registration of the models into a central database, making this unique collection visible and easily assessable through computers for future research. This will also serve to protect the models from unnecessary handling.
