Scandinavian Translations of Classical and Medieval Literature: A Bibliographic Internet Resource

The project is a joint Danish-Norwegian-Swedish initiative. It aims at: (i) creating a digitised bibliography of translations of classical and medieval literature into the Scandinavian languages; (ii) Internet publication of the bibliography; and (iii) Internet publication of facsimiles of high-quality translations of important literary texts. Professor Lars Boje Mortensen, Bergen, is the initiator of the project and editor-in-chief of the bibliography. Research for the bibliography and its digitalisation will be carried out separately in the three countries; the Swedish part will be located at the University Library of Lund University. A bibliographical tool of this sort will provide an efficient means of access to the considerable number of actually existing, good Scandinavian translations of ancient literature. These are imperfectly known, and in university courses in Scandinavia easily available English translations tend to be used, rather than the Scandinavian ones. The use of the translations into the Scandinavian languages would be preferable, both for didactic reasons and for the sake of Scandinavian language policy, so they need to be made visible. In the last century, Scandinavian academics, writers, and translators, have, in different ways, contributed to our understanding of classical and medieval literature. Their translations are an essential ingredient of that enterprise, and deserve to be publicised.
